Biography

U.S. Consul in Honolulu 1861-1866.

Received a law degree from Harvard in 1838. He moved to Wheeling, VA, where he practiced law most of his life, excluding for the years when he was U.S. Consul. He was the Mayor of Wheeling from 1850-1852 and 1856-1858. He was the Virginia delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago. Early in 1861, Lincoln appointed Caldwell to U.S. consul in Honolulu in the independent Kingdom of Hawaii. He returned to Wheeling, VA in 1867.
