  • First found in 18310908GWS_WHS1. GWS tells Henry about "Mrs Rev Morse" who is engaged in the good cause of Anti-Masonry. Rev Morse makes a trip through New Jersey preaching Anti Masonry. Searching for an anti mason named Morse from New Jersey led to The Proceedings of the United States Anti-Masonic Convention. Here, a Mr. Rev. Morse from New Jersey is listed as attending a September 17, 1830 Anti-Masonic Convention in Philadelphia (not too soon before the riled-up reverend in the aforementioned letter went on his anti-masonic crusade...). Further search for the convention's attendee list turned up a first name, Abner, a "Master Mason" who is converting to Anti-Masonry from Freemasonry.
  • Abner Morse was born in Massachusetts in 1793, graduated from Brown in 1816, graduated from Andover theological seminary in 1819 and that same year began preaching. He started preaching in MA, NY, and OH, and ended up in New Jersey where he preached at The First Congregational Church of Chester, NJ for four years until 1833. It was during this time he became involved in Anti Masonry.
