Biography

Arthur Henry Dutton graduated from West Point in the engineer corps in 1861. He served under General Mansfield in D.C. at the beginning of the Civil War and was put in charge of the defenses of Fernandina, FL. In 1862 he became colonel of the 21st Connecticut regiment. In North Carolina he served as Major-General Peck's chief of staff, holding a similar position under Major-General W.F. Smith. He distinguished himself at the battle of Drury's Bluff and was placed in command of the 3rd brigade. On June 5, 1864 he came upon the enemy, entrenched around Bermuda Hundred, and was mortally wounded at the beginning of the skirmish. He succumbed to his wounds later that day.
