Biography
James Freeman lived in Auburn and worked for the Seward family. The woman he married had been working for and connected to the Seward family since she was a child, and Frances Miller Seward referred to her as Maria. However, the woman who is listed in the census records with James Freeman is recorded as Fanny. James and Maria/Fanny Freeman were married in the late 1840s, and they raised several children in their household. Several of the children were presumably named after members of the Seward family, including Augustus, Frances, and Frederick. Frances Miller Seward expressed concerns about James and Maria's behavior and actions, which appeared to include frequently consuming alcohol.
