Biography
Horace Maynard was a politician from Tennessee. Born in. Massachusetts, he attended school there before moving to Tennesse around 1838. Maynard became a lawyer there before unsuccessfully running for Congress in 1853 as a Whig. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1856 and due to his support of the Union, was one of the few Southern politicians to retain his seat during the Civil War.
Fanny Seward recounts Maynard and his wife, Laura, attending a party at the Seward's Washington DC home in March of 1863.
