Wheeler was a lumberman and farmer who served in the New York Assembly in 1822, 1824, and 1826, and in the New York Senate from 1826 to 1830. In 1830 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Anti-Mason, serving one term, 1831 to 1833. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1832, and returned to his farming and lumbering enterprises.
