Biography

John Bailey Tuthill was the first cousin once removed of William Henry Seward. John's grandmother, Elizabeth Swazey, was the sister of Henry's father, Samuel Sweezey Seward. Little can be found about his life, but he was the oldest of Elizabeth and her husband Freegift's six children. John was likely born between 1801 (when Elizabeth and Freegift married) and 1804 (when his next sibling was born). He likely died in 1844, as Frances Miller Seward wrote in a letter to Augustus Seward on October 20, 1844, that "Mrs Tuthill of Goshen has lost her oldest son."
