Lee was a Confederate General and commanded the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Lee was born to a prominent Virginian landowning family, and was the son of American Revolution cavalry leader Colonel Henry "Light Horse Henry" Lee. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1829, Robert E. Lee served as a Captain in the Mexican American War. Lee was offered to lead the Union army, but chose to fight for the Confederacy instead out of allegiance to the South. Lee eventually surrendered to the Union Army on April 9, 1865.
