Biography
He was a Virginia senator who ardently defended southern interests in Congress. In 1861, a few weeks before the beginning of the war, Mason resigned from the Senate to serve the Confederacy. He was later arrested in November 1861 with Senator John Slidell as they traveled to Europe to amass diplomatic support for the Confederacy, known as the Trent Affair.
