Biography

United States Supreme Court Justice. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he enrolled in Harvard College at the age of thirteen and was graduated four years later. He was admitted to the bar in 1851, practiced law and in 1854, began his judicial career as a reporter for the State Supreme Court. He was appointed to the Massachusetts State Supreme Court as an Associate Justice in 1864 and was the youngest appointee in the history of the Court. In 1881, he was appointed as an Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court by President Chester A. Arthur and served in position until his death at the age of 74.
