Dr. Josiah Simpson, according to Find A Grave, was a US Army Officer who enlisted on 8 Dec 1855. When he enlisted he was a surgeon who served in the Regular Army. He was commissioned an officer in the Regular Army Medical Staff Infantry Regiment on 12 Aug 1855. He was promoted to Brevet Lt Colonel on 13 Mar 1865. He also was a medical director in the U.S. Army.
