Biography
Clarkson Nott Potter was born in Schenectady, NY in 1824. He graduated from Union College in 1842, graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a civil engineer in 1843, and later served as a U.S. Congressman. He was elected as a Democrat and served until 1875 in the forty-first, second and third congresses. He ran for reelection and served in the forty-fifth congress before retiring from politics. In later life he was the president of the American Bar Association and a trustee of Union College. Potter is mentioned by Frederick William Seward in his letter to his father William Henry Seward on September 1, 1866 and in an undated letter.
