Biography

"Twice widowed, Mrs. Hatch, nee Abia Thompson, was the mother of several distinguished children: Enos Thompson Throop (1784-1874), a governor of the State of New York, and George B. Throop (1793-1854), who served in the state assemblies of both the Empire state and Michigan, were born of her marriage to George Bliss Throop; Israel Thompson Hatch (1808-1875), US Representative from New York, and George W. Hatch (1804-1867), noted American engraver, were born of her marriage to George Whitefield Hatch. Her daughter Eliza Hatch (1800-1885) married US Representative from New York Gershom Powers.
The daughter of Enos Thompson and the former Sarah Hitchcock, she was a bride of 21 when she married her first husband, George Bliss Martin, in November 1783, the final year of the American Revolutionary War. Widowed eight years later, she married George Whitefield Hatch, whom she also survived. After his death, she came to reside at "Willowbrook", the Throop-Martin estate on Auburn's Lake Owasco, which was also home to her son Governor Throop, her widowed daughter Mehetable Throop Martin, her grandson Enos T.T. Martin, a noted lawyer and journalist, and his many children. She died there at age 84, surrounded by three generations of descendants. She was subsequently buried here in the Powers-Hatch Family plot next to her second husband, George Whitefield Hatch, who had predeceased her 17 years earlier, and where her brother, the Hon. Jesse Thompson, and her son-in-law, Congressman Powers, are also interred. Her marble headstone, which at some point became broken and detached from its base, now lies flat on the ground behind her husband's, which remains upright."
