Biography

Jacob Bigelow was born in Massachusetts. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1810. He began a practice in partnership with Dr. James Jackson in 1814. Bigelow and Jackson established the "New England Journal of Medicine." Bigelow lectured on botany at Harvard, and published a book on botany in 1814. From 1817-1820 he published "American Medical Botany," for which he drew many of the plates. He also served as the president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
