According to John Bale's The Image of Both Churches, "Hermann initially opposed the Protestant cause, voicing hostility towards Luther at the Diet of Worms. He gradually developed evangelical sympathies and made a formal break with the Catholic Church; he was thus excommunicated and deposed 1546."
