Biography
General Samuel Ryan Curtis attended West Point, graduating in 1831. He served during the Mexican-American War with the 2nd Ohio Volunteers. After the war, he resided in Keokuk, Iowa and served three terms in Congress beginning in 1856. He resigned his seat at the onset of the Civil War serving as a Brigadier General of Volunteers with the command of the Army of the Southwest. After the war, he worked briefly in negotiations with the Plains Indians and in railroad construction.
