Biography

Alexander Smith Johnson was born on July 30, 1817 in Utica, New York. He was a Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 1858 until 1859. He was also Judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit from 1875 until his death in 1878. He died on January 26, 1878. He is mentioned in 18640716FWS_TxW in regard to a potential appointment as the Commissioner under a treaty with Great Britain which a certain D.S. Dickinson already turned down.
