US Senator, New Jersey Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. United States Senator from New Jersey, 1821-1823; Secretary of the Navy under President Monroe, 1823-1829; Governor of New Jersey, 1832-1833; again United States Senator from New Jersey, 1833-1842. He was the son of NJ Congressman Henry Southard and the brother of NJ Congressman Isaac Southard. His daughter married Josiah Ogden Hoffman
