Biography
After studying law, he represented Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives and served from 1813 to 1818. Then he served in the US Senate from 1818-1819. In 1819-1823 , he was appointed by President James Monroe as U.S. Minister to Spain. After that he served several other terms as a Rep and Senator, also serving two years as Governor of Georgia. He was the Secretary of State under two presidents, Jackson and Van Buren, from 1834-1841.
