Martha E. Smith (nee Hall) was born in Le Roy, N.Y., to Ezekiel and Elizabeth Peckham Hall. She attended the Troy Seminary from 1832 until 1834, where she excelled in vocal music. In 1836, she was married to Junius A. Smith, the son of the parson that married Frances Miller and William Henry Seward. They had 10 children together. Martha lived considerably longer than her husband who died in 1864; in 1895, Martha's address was in Ridgewood, N.J.
