Samuel Cutler Ward was a prominent socialite and lobbyist during the 1860s and 1870s. He was dubbed "King of the Lobby," and represented multiple interests in Washington until his death in 1884. An accomplished chef, he combined his talents for cooking and conversation to woo and guests, dignitaries, and congressmen, and was well admired among the Washington elite.
