Biography

Willam Fargo began working at the young age of 13 as a mail carrier in his hometown of Pompey NY. He then worked as an express messenger for the Auburn & Syracuse Railroad under the supervision of Henry Wells. Wells, Fargo and Daniel Dunning formed their own freight service, "Wells & Company", in 1844. During his life,  Fargo maintained a leadership role of this company from its formation throughout it's evolution. The company "Wells & Co." eventually became the modern financial firms American Express and Wells Fargo. After achieving success as an entrepreneur, Fargo was elected mayor of Buffalo, serving from 1862-1866.
