Biography
John Porter Brown served in the navy as a young adult. In 1832 he accompanied his uncle, David Porter, to Constantinople (now Istanbul). From 1858 until his death he was secretary of the legation for the United States in Turkey. During his forty years of service he represented the United States nine times as charge d'affaires. He published Dervishes, Oriental Spiritualism, Turkish Evening Entertainments, and Ancient and Modern Constantinople.
