Biography

Christopher Columbus Augur graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1843, and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He married Jane Elizabeth Arnold in 1843, and had 11 children, one of whom died in childhood. He served in the Mexican-American War, and in the Yakima-Rogue War in the Pacific Northwest. Augur was a major in the Civil War and he was seriously wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. He played an important role in the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, and relieved Major General Heintzelman as commander of the Department of Washington. From 1867 to 1871 he commanded the Department of the Platte, from 1871-75 he commanded the Department of Texas, and from 1875-78 he commanded the Department of the Gulf. From 1878-1885 he held a variety of posts before retiring in Virginia. He died in Georgetown, Washington D.C.
