Biography

Leland Stanford studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1849, practicing in Port Washington, Wis. After his law library was burnt in a fire he moved to California going into business with his brothers. He entered politics in 1860, as an advocate of the Pacific Railroad, and was elected president of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1861. In 1861 he was also elected governor of California. In 1885 he was elected to the U.S. Senate for six years from March 4,1886. In honor of his son, he provided the funding for Stanford University.
