Biography
Martha (nee Hemming) Barber, was the wife of Dr. Jonathon Barber. Martha first married a Summerhays Dunkin (sometimes spelt Duncan) in 1806 in England. With Summerhays Dunkin Martha had two children: Christopher Dunkin, born in 1812, and Matilda Dunkin, born in 1815.
After Summerhays death, Martha married Jonathon Barber in 1824, and the two emigrated to North America. In the 1830s Dr. Barber worked in Harvard and lectured on phrenology. In 1831 Martha and Jonathon had a daughter, Susan Fitch Barber. In the mid to late 1830s the family moved to Montreal. Dr. Barber turned to homoeopathy and began lecturing on elocution. The family lived in Montreal for the next thirty years. Both Jonathon and Martha are buried in Mount Royal.
