Biography
Franklin T. Backus was born in Massachusetts. He was admitted as a junior-year student to Yale in 1834 and was admitted to the bar in 1839. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1846 and in 1848 became a state senator. He served on the peace committee in Washington in 1861. He was also a founding member of the Western Reserve Historical Society.
