Lewis Joy was a carpenter and joiner (someone who builds things by joining pieces of wood) in Auburn, NY. He was married to Harriet S. Joy, and as of an 1860 census, they had two children together: Julia and Sidney. In 1866 he was the Secretary of the Trades Assembly in Auburn, according to a letter William Henry Seward wrote to William Henry Seward, Jr.  on January 30, 1866.
