Biography

Rufus Saxton was born on October 19, 1824 in Greenfield, MA. He graduated from the military academy in 1849 and was appointed as a lieutenant. In 1853, he was assigned on duty to the Northern Pacific Railroad Exploration and Survey where he served until the Civil War. Saxton was promoted to brigadier-general in 1862 and was assigned to Harper's Ferry, VA.
