Biography
Thomas Wentworth Higginson was born on December 22, 1823 in Cambridge, MA. Higginson graduated Harvard Divinity School in 1847 which made him a pastor. Higginson was an extremely liberal anti-abolitionist who helped runaway slaves escape after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 and supported John Brown's raids. During the Civil War, he accepted command of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers (later the 33rd U.S. Colored Troops), the first black regiment in the U.S. armed forces. Higginson died on May 9, 1911 and is buried in Cambridge Cemetery.
