Biography
John Grant Mitchell was born on November 6, 1838 in Piqua, OH. Mitchell graduated from Kenyon College in 1859 and studied law in Columbus, OH. He enlisted in August 1, 1861 to fight for the Union and was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 113th Ohio Infantry on September 2, 1862. On January 12, 1865, Mitchell was promoted to brigadier general and after halting Confederate advances in March of the same year, he was promoted to major general. Mitchell resigned from the military on July 3, 1865 and resumed his law practice in Columbus. He died on November 7, 1894 and is buried in Green Lawn Cemetery.
