Biography
Samuel Townsend Shugert married Deborah M. (nee Dunlop). Shugert was the editor of the Centre Democrat for almost half a century. In 1844 he took a job in Washington in the patent office, later becoming the acting commissioner of patents. In 1868 he had a majority in the district for State senator, but partisan influence is said to have "unseated him." He served as a member of the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania from 1875-77.
