Rufus Wheeler Peckham

Rufus Wheeler Peckham was born in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY in 1809. He graduated from Union College at Schenectady in 1827 and was admitted to the bar in 1830. He practiced law in Albany, becoming the district attorney of Albany from 1838-1841. In 1841 he was succeeded as district attorney by Henry G. Wheaton, who was appointed by William Henry Seward after the Whigs came into power. Rufus was later elected as a Democrat to the twenty-third Congress, served as justice of the supreme court for the third judicial district, and served as associate judge of the court of appeals.
He married Isabella Adoline Peckham, with whom he had three children: Wheeler Hazard Peckham, Joseph Henry Peckham, and Rufus Peckham.
After Isabella's death in 1848, he married Mary Peckham (nee Foote). Mary and Rufus were lost at sea November 22, 1873, after there was a collision between two steamboats.
