"Walter Rogers Johnson was the son of Capt. Luke Johnson and Sarah Bowers Rogers and the husband of Nancy Maria Donaldson. He graduated from Harvard College. He was a distinguished scientist and educational reformer, who served as professor of chemistry and physics at Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, and was the first Secretary of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also did research on coal for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C."
