Biography

After graduating from Yale in 1839, Hall moved to Missouri. There he worked as a lawyer and rose as a prominent Democrat in the west. He left his law practice to enlist in the Mexican American War, and he became  known for helping his his regimental colonel, A. W. Doniphan, draft the Kearny Code. After serving in the war, Hall left NM to travel to CA with the "Mormon Battalion," which was an unit of over 500 Latter Day Saints. After the war, Hall returned home to Missouri was elected as a Democrat to represent the state in the House from 1847-1853. After three terms in office, he went back to Missouri to work as a lawyer until he was appointed as lieutenant governor of the state in 1861. He became the governor of the state after the death of Gov Gamble in 1864 until he was voted out in 1865.
