Biography

Robert Hewson Pruyn is referenced by Frederick William Seward in the context of his role as minister to Japan (1861-1865) in his letter to Frances Miller Seward on November 23, 1861. After his time as minster, he was involved in various banking activities - National Commercial Bank of Albany, Albany Savings Bank, Metropolitan Trust Company, etc - and educational boards - trustee, Rutgers' College; Board of Directors president, Dudley Observatory; Board of Trustees Vice President, Albany Medical College, etc. 

Pruyn was born to Casparus Francis and Ann (nee Hewson) Pruyn in Albany. Before being appointed to be minister to Japan by President Lincoln, he married Jane Ann Lansing (daughter of Gerrit Yates and Helen Ten Eyck Lansing). They had four children: Edward Lansing, Robert Clarence, Helen Lansing, and Charles Lansing.
