Stephen Jacobs was listed as a laborer and a "wood sawyer" in the 1865 and 1870 censuses. A letter from Edwin Seward from December 9, 1850 says
"Mrs Seward has been to the store and met betty the wife of Stephen Jacobs he worked three or four for our Father he is wasting very fast with the consumption I will go and see him"
