Samuel Seward Jennings was the son of Gideon and Sophia Jennings (nee Carpenter). Gideon was the brother of Mary Jennings Seward, mother to William Henry Seward, making Samuel a cousin of Henry. Samuel was married to Sarah Jennings (nee Smith) in 1820 in New York. Sometime after the birth of their two sons (William Jennings b. 1822, and Thomas H. Jennings b. 1836), they moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where they were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
