Abraham Godwin

Biography
"Abraham Godwin Jr. was born on July 14, 1791 to Abraham and Maria Munson Godwin. He was baptized August 21, 1791. He later became the first Lieutenant of the expedition to Canada in 1812 led by Generals Brown and Izard. He later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the New Jersey state militia. In 1816 when his brother Henry committed suicide, he became Postmaster of Paterson, a position he would hold until 1829, and briefly again before his death in 1849. In 1821, he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly, of which he served until 1832. In November 1840, Abraham was tasked to take the New Jersey votes to Washington, D.C. for the Presidential Election. He married Martha Parke on August 12, 1815. They had 6 children together, Parke, Maria, Ariana, Martha, Henry and Abraham Godwin. Abraham Godwin Jr. died on August 18, 1849. Abraham Godwin was originally buried in the Sandy Hill Cemetery in Paterson, New Jersey. His remains, along with those of his wife, Martha (Parke) Godwin, were removed from Sandy Hill and buried in the Munn/Godwin family plot at Cedar Lawn Cemetery on October 16, 1871. Interment records from the Sandy Hill graveyard removal list record that Abraham Godwin's death was a result of consumption."
