Biography

Charles Bemis was born in Massachusetts, and came to Auburn about 1827. He worked under Abijah Fitch and Amos Underwood in the "grocery trade." Afterwards he worked in the saloon and confectionary business. In 1854 he became "disgusted with the business of liquor selling" and sold his interest in the concern to his partner. He then became an agent for the Paper Mill Company and Woolen Mill Company. At one time, with Lewis Richardson, he was also interested "in the cabinet ware business." 
In 1838 he married Emily Underwood. He had four daughters with Emily.
