He was a Brevet Brigadier-General in the US Army, and the Assistant Quartermaster-General. Frances Worden wrote to Augustus Seward in 1851 that after his death, Genl. Whiting was eulogized highly in the newspapers. He married Eliza MacComb and they had several children together.
