Biography

James Wood Hoyt was born in 1823 in New York State. He attended Union College at Schenectady, N.Y., with Frederick Seward. After graduating, Hoyt worked in Syracuse as a Presbyterian divine and professor. In the 1850s he moved to Indiana, where, in 1852, he married Elizabeth (nee Lindsley). Hoyt later moved to Nashville, Tennessee. He had five children with Elizabeth: Margaret, Mary, Phillip, Elizabeth, and Eliza. After Elizabeth's death, James married Manilla (nee Gleaves), with whom he had a daughter.
