Biography

John Jones McRae graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1834 and then studied law in Pearlington, Mississippi. He was a member of the State house of representatives for Mississippi from 1848 to 1850 and was appointed as a Democrat the the US Senate after Jefferson Davis resigned from December 1851-March 1852. He was Governor of Mississippi from 1854 to 1858 and elected to the thirty-fifth Congress to fill the spot of John A. Quitman after he died, and then reelected to the thirty-sixth Congress and served from December 1858, until he withdrew January 1861. After the secession, he served the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1864. In May of 1868 he went to the British Honduras and then died at Belize on May 31.
