Evangeline (Eva) St. Clare is a fictional character from Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Eva is a child who convinces her father to purchase the slave "Uncle Tom." Eva and Tom read the Bible together and discuss religion. Eva also befriends a slave girl "Topsy." Part of the way through the novel, Eva becomes ill and dies. On her death bed, she gives the slaves each a lock of her hair. Eva's name is symbolic for the evangelist, and she is said to show her Christianity values by getting upset about the treatment of slaves and by always showing kindness and compassion.
