Biography

John Hopkins Clarke graduated from Brown University in 1809 and then studied law. He was clerk of the supreme court of Providence County in 1813 and then worked as a cotton manufacturer until becoming a State house of representative from 1836 to 1842 and 1845 to 1847. He was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate from 1847 to 1853. He then resumed his work as a cotton manufacturer until his death in 1853.
