Possibly mentioned in a letter form William Seward Jr. to Frances Seward, October 27, 1855, "After tonight Fred Howes is going to stay with me."  There is a Fred Howes in the NYS census the same year, living in Auburn, 20 years old, a clerk living at a boarding house. It is plausible this is the person Willie referred to, but there is no further evidence to prove it.  There is another mention of Willie and Fred Howes in a letter from Frances written January 1, 1859, "Will has taken his [daguerreotype of Aunt Clara] which was in company with Fred Howes' to his room."
There is a FJ Howes in Fort Hill Cemetery who died October 7, 1858 at age 26, which does not correlate with the age of the Fred Howes in the 1855 census.
