Edwin Wallace Stoughton

He grew up in Vermont and moved to NYC to work as an attorney in 1840. He was one of the lawyers in the publicized Goodyear cases and he was known for his Republican support of the Grant administration. His brother was Henry Stoughton, so his nephews were Edwin Henry Stoughton and Charles Bradley Stoughton (both whom served as generals in the Civil War). He married Mary Fiske Green in 1855 and they had no children together, but he became a stepfather to the philosopher John Fiske.
