Biography

Mentioned in Augustus Seward (nephew) to William Henry Seward, December 22, 1856. Anthony Adams was arrested in Edenton, North Carolina on suspicion of being a runaway slave. He wrote to attorney James Bennett in New York for help, claiming he was from Port Jervis, New York, and citing references whose testimony was sought to prove he was a freeman. His plea and Bennett's letter were reported in The Liberator in July of 1856. The article also printed a letter from a CRH, who was visiting his hometown of Edenton and took an interest in the case. He does suggest that, "If the boy left your town for any improper conductand is in any way vicious or trifling it may be as well to let him have a good master and try a few years of wholesome plantation labor." Adams' case was also mentioned in a NYS motion to "remunerate James Bennett for expenses incurred and services renedered in procuring the release of Anthony Adams, a colored citizen of this state, from imprisonment in the jail of Edenton, North Carolina, to prevent him from being sold into slavery.
