Edward John Littleton was born in 1791 to Moreton Walhouse of Hatherton and Anne Craycroft. He changed his name from Walhouse to Littleton, in compliance with the will of his grand-uncle, Sir Edward Littleton. In 1812, he married Hyacinthe Mary. They had one son and three daughters. He served in the House of Commons, speaking for the first time in 1816. In 1828 he supported parliamentary reform. In May 1833, he became chief secretary to the lord-lieutenant of Ireland, and became a member of the privy council in June of that year. He voted for the repeal of the corn laws in 1846, and was appointed lord-lieutenant of Staffordshire on June 8, 1854. In 1849, he married Caroline Anne (nee Hurt). He gave his last speech in the House of Lords on May 23, 1862. He died on May 4, 1863.
