Edward Henry Stanley was the son of Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley. He was titled "Lord Stanley" from 1851 to 1869. He travelled extensively throughout the 1840 — to North America, the West Indies, Jamaica and Ecuador, and Bengal. He served as president Indian army and patent laws commissions, member of Cambridge University Commission, and colonial secretary. He served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1866 to 1868 and 1874 to 1878. He was Chancellor of London University, 1891-93, Lord Rector of Glasgow University 1868-71, and Edinburgh University, 1875-80. He died in 1893.
